Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) affects many people who often turn to their doctors for relief. Medications and therapies work in most, but for others the symptoms are not completely eliminated. Since both the medical and alternative health communities recognize the connection between mental stress and IBS, it makes perfect sense that IBS can be effectively managed with hypnosis.

A number of gastrointestinal problems are exacerbated by emotional and mental stress. Hypnosis is extremely beneficial in entering a specific area of the mind by inducing a state of complete relaxation. Once there, the images created through the hypnotherapist work to relieve both stress and the resulting effects on IBS.

A 1984 study reported in the British publication, the Lancet, states that after seven hypnosis sessions, 15 people who had not previously responded to traditional treatments for IBS, has successfully seen a reduction in symptoms. Statistically, hypnosis is believed to be beneficial in treating IBS approximately 80 percent of the time.

Specific findings in the study of the effect of hypnosis on gastrointestinal problems indicate that hypnosis can slow the movement of matter in the intestinal tract. It can also regulate the secretion of acid in the stomach. In addition, hypnosis was found to improve nausea and vomiting and provide long-term relief of functional dyspepsia.

The mental state of a person under hypnosis can impact the physical body in many ways. The person in this state is extremely focused so that the mind is receptive to the suggestions made by the hypnotherapist. Further studies using between 4 and 7 hypnosis sessions have reported success rates of between 70 and 95 percent in terms of relief from IBS symptoms such as bloating, diarrhea and abdominal pain.

Clinical hypnotherapist, Steve G. Jones, has developed a self hypnosis program specific to IBS. Called "Control IBS," the program is used at home for 21 consecutive nights and uses imagery directed toward a healthier gastrointestinal system.
